Monthly Club News
“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Hudson Garden Club.
Our first meeting will be held at St. James’ Church, 642 Main Road, Hudson, on Tuesday, March 16 at 7:30pm sharp. We will begin with the Annual General Meeting, chaired by long-time member, Ernie Frohloff. The Nominating Committee has submitted the following names for election to the Board of Directors: Debbie Seitz, Pat Anderson, Shelley Lamonde, Penny McCaig, and Bill Osler.
Instead of waiting until the holidays, non-perishable food items will now be collected at each meeting and donated to Le Pont Bridging throughout the year. Please be generous.
Our speaker, Stefan Sobkowiak, will begin at 7:45pm. His presentation is “Demystifying Pruning”.
In order to facilitate a smooth registration at the first meeting, I urge you to complete your membership form before arriving. It would be even better if you could mail it beforehand. The fee per household is $15; $20 if paid after March 31, 2010.
We hope to see you all at the meeting and feel free to bring any friends who may be interested in becoming new members. Please remember to park efficiently as parking spaces are limited.
Mrs. Obama’s garden has ex-“seeded” expectations
Last year at this time, being in South Carolina, I wrote about the garden that Michelle Obama had planted on the South Lawn of the White House. Well that garden, which cost $200, is more than a plot of land. It is also a soapbox. The South Lawn garden has given Mrs. Obama a platform to speak out about the country’s childhood obesity problem, extol the benefits of eating fresh food and teach children early to appreciate vegetables. The garden is boosting interest in gardening nationwide and has become so popular that even foreign dignitaries ask Mrs. Obama about it when they meet.
Education Grant
The Hudson Garden Club (HGC) is pleased to announce it will once again offer an education grant in 2010 to be awarded to a student in the field of horticulture or environmental studies.
The $500 grant will be awarded in May to a student, chosen by the HGC Selection Committee, who meets the following criteria:
- The student’s home is located in Hudson or Saint-Lazare; and is
- A high school student who has been accepted in a CEGEP, college or university program related to horticulture or environmental sciences, OR
- A student who is currently registered in a CEGEP, college or university program related to horticulture or environmental sciences.
